Premier Soccer League (PSL) Betting

The South African Premiership more commonly known as the Premier Soccer League(PSL) is the largest and richest league in Africa. The league was founded in 1996 after an agreement between the National Soccer League and the remnants of the National Professional Soccer League. After this deal was concluded it was decided that the Premier Soccer League would be its trade name. Manning Rangers were the first to be crowned champions of the PSL in 1997 when Gordon Igesund coached the side and stunned all and sundry by winning the title ahead of a number of more fancied opponents....

From 1998 to 2000 the league was dominated by Mamelodi Sundowns, who pulled off a hat-trick of titles. In 2001, Igesund moved to Orlando Pirates and helped the Buccaneers’ secure the title. The following season he moved to Cape Town based Santos and steered them to the league title. He rewrote the history books by becoming the first coach to win the championship with three different clubs. He then won it again with Mamelodi Sundowns in the 2007/08 season.

The league was reduced from 18 to 16 teams after the end of the 2001–02 season to avoid fixture congestion. The 2005–06 season saw Mamelodi Sundowns capturing the title for a fourth time. The Brazilians have continued their domination of the PSL winning their 7th consecutive title in the 2023/24 season. They lead the way with 11 titles followed by Soweto giants, Pirates and Chiefs who have won four titles each. There is nothing that matches the atmosphere like when two of the big three teams meet with the Soweto derby pulling in crowds in excess of 80 000.

Why Bet on the Premier Soccer League (PSL)

Soccer is the most popular sport in the country therefore it's no surprise that the PSL is so popular with fans and punters alike.Million of South Africans support their teams every weekend and literally put their money where their mouths are by betting on the various teams. The PSL was once dominated by the Soweto giants, Chiefs and Pirates but the undoubted best team in the country now is Sundowns.

Despite the success of the Pretoria based team, the majority of local fans still support the Amakhosi and the Buccaneers. As any fan of the Sea Robbers will tell you, “Once a Buccaneer, Always a Buccaneer”. The PSL has proven to be high on underdog teams winning therefore punters are constantly chancing their arm by betting on the long shot.

Mzansibet will have extensive betting markets for all the PSL matches with live betting also available. Popular Betting Markets for PSL

Mzansibet will have soccer punters spoilt for choice as there are hundreds of betting markets on each PSL match. One of the main reasons that betting on the PSL is so popular in recent years is the sheer number of betting options available to punters. It is great that there are so many different bets available but it is of no use if you do not know what each bet means. We have formulated a list of the most popular bets and explained each one in detail so you have a better understanding before placing a bet.

Three way bet (1x2): This traditional bet used to be the most common type of bet as there were not a lot of options available to punters when sports betting was first introduced. You could either choose Team 1(Home) or Team 2(Away) to win while the third option was the draw(x).There was a 33.3% chance of winning your bet which was not great odds. These days you can choose a double chance bet(1x) which increases your chances to 66.7% although the odds are low for this bet.

Accumulator bet: The accumulator/multi bet is the most popular bet as punters can win huge sums of money for a small bet. The principle of high risk, high reward is very prevalent as we encourage this bet by offering promotions like Odds Booster and Returning your Stake if the accumulator is one leg out.

Both teams to score (BTTS): This is another bet that punters love specially if the teams that are playing are renowned for scoring many goals and not having the best defence, The BTTS bet is often used in football accumulators.

Specials: Special bets are unique betting options that differ from standard bets and can vary widely depending on the event. These bets typically focus on less common events and offer opportunities beyond regular sports outcomes. Examples include who will be the Outright Winner of the Premier Soccer League for the upcoming season. .

Over/Under bet: In this type of bet the bookie comes up with a total for goals eg.2.5 goals and the punter must decide if the total goals scored in the match will be over or under 2.5 goals. This is an excellent bet when two attack minded teams are playing as the over bet is usually a winner. Likewise when two teams that struggle to score, the under bet is a great bet.

Correct score bet: If you enjoy betting on the exact number of goals, you might like correct score wagers, which many bettors prefer. Guessing the correct score is difficult as you need to guess the total number of goals both teams will score by the end of the game. The chances of predicting the correct score is slim but the exceptional odds make it worth the risk.

Handicap betting: In handicap betting, bookies remove an advantage for a team or player over another by adding or reducing goals. The aim is to make the match tighter especially if a strong team is facing a weak team. In the PSL if Sundowns are at home playing Royal AM, then handicap bet could be productive for the punter.

Players To Be Shown A Card: Bookings and sending offs can greatly affect a game and impact different types of bets. In big matches, you can often find odds for specific events like a named player getting a card or being sent off. It’s important to consider the chances of these events happening especially in important games where emotions run high and key players might be more likely to receive cards.

Tips and Strategies for Betting on the Premier Soccer League

Research the form of teams: The league table can show a team's current form, but it doesn't always tell the whole story. For example, a team in 13th place might have recently dropped from 7th after losing five games in a row while the team in 14th could have just won three games in a row to climb out of the relegation zone. Based on this, it is clear that you should bet on the 14th placed team.

Make Goal based bets: Goals markets are often overlooked betting options with great profit potential. Like betting on corners, the outcome of the game doesn't matter for this type of bet. This makes it easier to predict and offers better odds compared to betting on match results.

Monitor injuries of the teams: It’s easy to stay on top of who’s fit and who’s facing a spell on the sidelines in the digital age we live in. Stats are easily available that you can use to find out about the availability of each squad while there are other apps and sites that you can use for real-time updates. One or two injuries or suspensions can drastically harm a team’s chances of winning and maybe turn their scintillating run of form into a desperate scramble to pick up points – remember this as you create the best soccer betting strategy.

Home ground form: The pattern for decades in soccer has suggested that home advantage plays a huge role in a team’s season. Taking advantage of the noise of fans in their stadium and becoming used to familiar surroundings is important for a club’s success and this is usually reflected in the odds. Take Liverpool for example as they have proven very difficult to beat at Anfield, so they can be used as a banker in multi bets.

Don't bet with your heart: If you want to win your soccer bets , use your head instead of your heart. Always check the team's recent performance and how they play at home and away. Some teams consistently perform well against certain opponents and you can find this information in the head-to-head records.

Most teams in the PSL have focused more on defence in the last few years and as a result the Under Goals bet has proved most fruitful. The average number of goals per match is under 2.5 which makes the under bet win more often.

One of the most important points to remember is to always control your budget and never chase your losses. Set aside a predetermined amount to bet and if you lose, then that is fine as you budgeted that amount, win or lose.

Top Teams and Players in the Premier Soccer League

When you talk about the PSL, it's impossible for Sundowns not to spring to mind. They have dominated local soccer like no team has done before. Winning seven straight league titles is unprecedented in South Africa and they start the new season as favourites to make it eight in a row. The possible pretenders to their crown will come from Pirates and probably Chiesgf. The Brazilians have a star studded lineup but there could be a chink on their with the departure of their coach Rhulani Mokwena.

The highlight of the PSL season is the clashes between Pirates and Chiefs in the Soweto Derby. The rivalry between the teams ranks alongside some of the other great matches like the El Clasico and the Merseyside derby. The biggest crowds are present when Sundowns play either of the Soweto teams, regardless if it is a home or away fixture.

It comes as no surprise that the majority of the star players in the PSL come from Sundowns. The likes of Keagan Dolly, Peter Shalulile and Themba Zwane all hail from the seven time champions. Last season’s Golden Boot winner Tshegofatso Mabasa from Pirates will be the man to beat for the top scorer award. His performances were all the more impressive as he was on load for a part of the campaign.
